Ann Steer Art Gallery showcases original ocean art, and beach prints, greeting cards and postcards. I developed my style without formal qualifications or study – my first choice of medium being pastels, I was hooked from the first moment my eyes set sight on those pretty rows of chalk and the glorious abundance of colour. Take a peek inside someone’s pastel box and you can almost get a sense of their personality. With that in mind, I've spent the past year’s experimenting through bravery, mistakes and a determination to grow and develop my own style.
I try to paint quite varied subjects but I am always drawn back to our beautiful beaches, an endless supply of inspiration. Light plays such a big part in my painting process, I especially love that time on the beach when the day is starting to cool, the shadows are creeping past the sand dunes, changing from hues of pinks to purple and blue as the sun sets and you can contemplate the wonderful day that has been had.
Currently I am intrigued by oil paints so once again I am learning, making mistakes, evolving..... keep tuned for some oil portraits. Creating is a playground that swells when you explore it.
I get so excited by the promise of a new blank canvas, that early time when you are collaborating photographs rummaging through the colourful array of pastels, sketching in your composition, it’s a free and easy time with no pressure or expectations.
So what’s best? The excitement of a new start or the satisfaction of completing a piece of artwork, not sure I can answer this one yet! People often ask me how do you know when you have finished. I think that is a very hard call. I always take time to sit, have a cup of tea and analyse my painting, sometimes an overnight break can do wonders, you can walk back in the studio and bang, you know exactly what needs adjusting.
I regularly take on private commissions and my work is represented in galleries including: Jahroc in Margaret River, Aspects at Kings Park, A&A Art Displays and Leamac Picture Framers and Gallery.
My home studio/gallery in Mindarie is open by appointment and you can usually find me there covered in pastel dust, sometimes on my face, listening to great music and creating up a storm. Just contact me for a viewing.
Thanks for visiting, have a look around and if you've any questions or comments please send me a message, I’d love to hear from you.
